VHS enjoyed surprising longevity for nearly 40 years, before the last remaining VCR/VHS factory was shuttered in 2016. For anyone who grew up in the 1980s–1990s and their parents, VHS afforded a love of film and television shows. Just looking at the colorful cases of Disney classics and other favorites can evoke powerful feelings of nostalgia.

It’s reassuring to know that all those beloved VHS tapes don’t need to collect dust in a dark corner of your basement – you can relive wonderful memories by digitizing them yourself or using a VHS conversion service. Keep in mind that VHS tapes can get damaged from both lack of use or overuse. With that said, in order to preserve precious memories, your best bet is to convert VHS to digital sooner rather than later.

The Age of Video To Digital Conversion (DVDs, Digital Downloads, Streaming)

Old VCRs are known to ruin favorite video tapes and buying a used one is quite a gamble since there’s no guarantee it will work. Watching old video tapes may no longer be possible unless you convert VHS to DVD or a digital file. And like VHS, the days of DVDs and Blu-rays appear to be numbered. In the first half of 2020, digital movie sales soared past DVD/Blu-ray sales for the first time in the US. While DVD\Blu-ray sales tallied more than $10 billion in annual sales in 2014, in the first six months of 2020, they rang up a mere $1.275 billion.

While high-definition Blu-ray players are available and some cinephiles swear by them, most people don’t notice a difference between digital downloads and Blu-rays and definitely no difference between DVDs and their streaming service. We recommend selecting a digital download or USB instead of a DVD because these options offer a number of benefits, including less clutter. Selecting the digital download option offers the greatest versatility for editing with video software.
