What You Get

VHS-C tapes degrade from both neglect and overuse, and digitizing sooner rather than later is the best way to preserve them. Here's what you get when you convert VHS-C to digital with us.

Clear, high-quality digital video

Your VHS-C tapes are converted to digital video at 720x480 resolution. Our proprietary software analyzes your video and removes blank footage, so what you keep is what's on the tape. The result is often better than the original.

Safe & secure, right here in the USA

Every tape is converted in-house at our Indianapolis lab, never outsourced. From the moment your box arrives, each tape gets a unique barcode, each item is weighed to the gram, and 60 high definition cameras monitor the property. Your original tapes always go back to you.

Tape recovery and repair

VHS-C tapes can break from long periods of disuse or from overuse. If one of yours is damaged, our skilled technicians use professional equipment to attempt a repair, at no extra cost.

VHS-C to Digital Works

Our technicians convert each tape at our Indianapolis lab, titling it from its label so the digital file carries the same title.

Step 3: Get your videos back, digital

Get your digital video by download, or on a USB or hard drive chosen at checkout. Your original tapes come back too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why it makes sense to use a VHS-C to digital conversion service

VHS-C is the compact version of VHS, used in many camcorders to record family moments. VHS was the home video standard for nearly 40 years, and the last VCR/VHS factory in the U.S. closed in 2016. Tapes degrade from both neglect and overuse, so it's best to convert VHS-C to digital sooner rather than later.

ScanCafe does the work in-house in the USA, never outsourced, with award-winning quality, guaranteed safety and industry-beating prices. The finished video is often better than the original tape.

What is the resolution of the video you capture?

Your video is captured at 720x480 resolution. For USB deliveries, the file resolution is 1280x720.

Will I get to review my video before I receive my originals? Can I delete footage?

Digital download customers can review their footage online before their original tapes ship back. Once an order has left our facility, footage can't be deleted.

Do you process PAL tapes?

Yes, we digitize PAL tapes. While most US equipment can only play North American NTSC formats, we have specialized multi-system players to process PAL tapes from Europe, the UK, Australia, and Asia. We can convert PAL formats for VHS, Hi8, and MiniDV into high-quality digital files.

Do you store my digitized video after my order is complete?

We keep compressed copies of your digitized video for a period of time after your order ships, so we can re-copy it if there's a problem in transit. If you'd like duplicate copies, request them when you place your order.

What type of box should I ship my VHS-C tapes in?

Use a box, not an envelope. Choose a sturdy, double-walled box, like the kind used for shipping books, and avoid flimsy department store garment boxes and padded envelopes. Make sure your box is filled, even if you need to pad it, with bubble wrap, foam peanuts or crumpled newspaper so your tapes can't slide around.

  • Label your tapes before we digitize them, legibly and preferably in printed capitals
  • Print three copies of your pre-addressed shipping label: one for the outside of the box, one for inside, and one for your records
  • Estimate your order size when you place your order. An exact count isn't required
  • Ship your box with the designated courier
